Short answer: the cost of home automation depends mainly on how many circuits and devices you automate, whether the system is wired or wireless, and the brands you choose. A two-bedroom apartment with lighting control and a smart lock costs far less than a villa with wired automation in every room, motorised curtains, an automatic gate and CCTV. The only reliable figure is an itemised quotation after a site survey.
The 8 things that decide the price
- Number of controlled circuits. Every light group, fan or socket you want to control needs a channel on a controller. This is usually the biggest driver.
- Wired or wireless. Wired systems need control cabling and a central controller; wireless uses modules behind switches. For a new build, wired often gives better long-term value. See wired vs wireless.
- Dimming. Dimmable circuits cost more than simple on/off and may need dimmable LED drivers.
- Touch panels and keypads. Designer glass or metal panels cost more than basic modular smart switches.
- Motorised curtains and blinds. Priced per window, depending on width, weight and track type.
- Gate automation. Depends on gate type (sliding or swing), weight and whether you add battery backup.
- Security. Number and type of CCTV cameras, recording days, video door phones and smart locks.
- Stage of construction. Planning before plastering avoids wall cutting and repainting, which keeps both cost and mess down.
How to plan a sensible budget
- Start with the rooms you use most: living, dining and master bedroom lighting scenes give the biggest daily benefit.
- Lay cable now, add devices later. In a new build, run control cabling and spare conduit to every room even if you automate only a few rooms at first.
- Combine security early: cameras, door phone and gate share cabling routes, so planning them together saves work.
- Ask for an itemised quote: each room and device priced separately, so you can add or remove items easily.
What to ask any installer
- Will lights and scenes keep working without the internet?
- Can I add rooms and devices later without replacing the controller?
- Who supports the system after installation, and is AMC available?
- Is the quotation itemised by room and device?
