Short answer: plan home automation and security as soon as the floor plan is final, before electrical conduit and plastering. Mark every controlled light, curtain, AC, gate, camera and panel on the electrical drawings, lay control cabling and spare conduit with the electrician, and fit devices only after painting. Doing it in this order avoids cutting finished walls.
Stage 1: Floor plan is final
- List the scenes you want in each room (for example Welcome, Movie, Dinner, Night).
- Decide which windows get motorised curtains or blinds.
- Mark the gate type and the side it opens to.
- Mark camera positions for the gate, main door, parking, side passages and terrace.
- Choose where the main touch panels go: entrance, living room and bedside.
Stage 2: Electrical conduit
- Control cabling from every controlled circuit to the distribution board area.
- A power point near the top of each motorised curtain.
- Network (CAT6) and power to each camera point and the recorder location.
- Cable from the gate to the video door phone and the house.
- Spare conduit to every room for future additions.
Stage 3: Before plastering
- Walk the site and check every point against the drawing.
- Label cables at both ends.
- Photograph walls before plastering, so you know where cables run.
Stage 4: Finishing
- Fit touch panels, controllers, curtain motors and cameras after painting.
- Check LED drivers are dimmable where dimming is planned.
- Set up the recorder and confirm how many days of recording it keeps.
Stage 5: Handover
- Programme scenes and schedules with the family present.
- Install the app on every family member's phone.
- Get a list of all devices and passwords, and agree an AMC schedule.
